I keep reflecting back to one of the 1st times I met you. We were at Smoothieville getting ready for ’90 tour. I remember you flawlessly chucking triples and quads. You nailed every one of them with that smile on each catch. THAT SMILE. That smile we all will remember and treasure always.

Each year since, has a wonderful memory. You are in every memory. Laughing, smiling, spinning, cheering.

1990: Singing under the bleachers in the pouring rain, those damn skirts, those damn turbans, all the Wet and Wild 521, Now or Never drill with horn cases, those pink things, (really what the heck were they supposed to be? GUM?), finials on the 50. ON THE FIDDY!

1991: Hair, big hair, REALLY BIG HAIR, winning DCE, beating the snot out of BD, the water balloon attack on Jim Coates, Mothra, This Woman’s Work with Laurel.

1992: Banana rifles, daily beatings by Jim Buckley, elements pinball, tie-dye anything earthy, hubba bubba, DanO's parade etiquette, beating 2 DCI legends at finals!

1993: Field of View – we didn’t march together but I remember seeing you at all the shows and LAUGHING at that show. Dee and I laughed too. Todd didn’t find it funny.

1994: Field of View – you came in as I aged out. I remember sitting with Dee at Ehinger watching you guys practice. Or rather watching just you. You were the person every audience member gravitated to. Flawless. Graceful. Fierce.

1995: Field of View – IMO, this show was yours. The WGI iconic image of you in front of the mirror.

Time plopped along, and everyone kept teaching, performing, or a little of both. Then in 1997, I was asked to join the Pocono Staff where Jeff was already writing for Jonathan. It was like coming home. We had a chance to work

together on and off for the next 5 years. Too many laughs to list, and many more incidents to leave undocumented.

Alumni events grew in size and anniversary years, we all looked forward to seeing each other year after year.

Catching up, spinning for a cause, hugging Brits, but most importantly, never leaving our spirits away for long.

When you were diagnosed with cancer, everything changed. Dee, Kathy, Tash, Marci, Marlo and I wanted to do something for you. What kept coming back to was your smile. THAT SMILE OF YOURS. So, at DCI East, we

covered J. Birney Crum in Yellow Smiley Faces. We know you approved.

It will be difficult to be at these events in the coming years without you. I can’t think of any kinder example of a Spirit Sister in word, carry, and deed. I will miss you my dear friend. It was an honor to perform with you, teach with you, but most of all, laugh with you.

Love always,

Joy
